There are 5 kinds of Maras in Buddhism.

  1. Khandha Māra – The five aggregates of clinging
  2. Kilesa Māra – The defilements
  3. Abhisankhāra Māra – The Karmic force
  4. Maccu Māra – The death itself
  5. Devaputta Māra – The god Mara who leads a faction in the Paranimmita-Vasavatti heaven.

Figuring out what is Mara or Who is Mara is not an easy task. Following is one clue I came across- with references about Devaputta (God) Mara.

Once Maha Moggallana was the Mara named Dhusi. He never understood dhamma at that life. When he was Maha Moggalana, his sisters'(Kali) son was the (new) Mara at our age. That was the reason why Mahamoggalana could easily identify Mara’s presence at the time he sneaked into his intestines. This is a honored position or a title. Studying about Mara is a very interesting topic and mostly covered with many misconceptions. (Majjh. 50)

One important common fact about Mara’s many encounters with Buddha and disciples is that when ever Mara was identified properly as Mara, then Mara would be defeated and leave.
